March 24th, 2009hauschka ferndorf
February 11th, 2009hauschka aka volker bertelmann weaves together an ethereal soundscape homage to his childhood in Ferndorf, a provincial german mountain town. hauschka explores the notion of ‘prepared piano’ where he utilizes varied impedimenta, like bits of leather and metal placed in between the strings and on its dampers and hammers to achieves a tinkering, clicking, glitchy texture beneath the beautiful harmonies and arching strings. Glassian, repetitive, electronic-tinged, minimalism appears to be the trend in postmodern classical. in line with this sound spectrum, haushka succeeds in streamlining his composition to its essence which affects and intrigues, both remembering fondly and looking forward.
toumani diabates beautiful kora
February 10th, 2009toumani diabate is a Malian kora player who composes hauntingly beautiful music. his mande variations, a play on bach’s goldberg variations, was produced by nick gold (Buena Vista, Orchestra Baobab) and released early last year. it is a masterpiece by, arguably, the most skilled kora player on the planet. it takes a lifetime of mastering an instrument to play with the ease of walking or breathing. toumani has clearly achieved this kind of proficiency. his playing is so beautiful and effortless it makes listening to it feel second nature as well. this collection of kora pieces is absolutely captivating.
zach condon is the bees knees
January 18th, 2009
beirut’s zach condon is one of the most promising young musicians of this moment. at the tender age of 22, zach is clearly an old soul. he’s released a wealth of distinct music in the last three years, exploring a gamut of musical stylings and making an impression on each. i was completely enamored with Post Cards from Italy on Gulog Orkestar when it came out and i have enjoyed every record and ep since. this video from his latest project March Of The Zapotec EP, comes as no exception. its exciting listening to zach’s style burgeon.
